A good 3D modeling / animation software?

Where can I find a good 3D modeling and animation software? I'm looking to use it to make 3D characters for a video game. I already know about Blender 3D, but I am looking for an alternative to Blender. Any good recommendations?

1. Hmm for modeling i suggest Prodesktop but it looks like you are looking for animation. When I modded videogames I always used Maya Tools
2. Why use anything other than blender? The other top ones are Maya and 3d studio max.
3. 3ds Max (3D Studio Max) - It's very expensive, and you could spend a lifetime learning how to fully use it, but it's about the best there is.
